What a FANTASTIC place to live. I LOVED it with all my heart. Dad, Tex Parsons, was posted to RAF Akrotiri in 1972 and we should have stayed till '75 but the posting cut short. Coming home was like a breavement. First we lived in a flat on the Byepass in Limassol, then moved to Kapsalos area - to Stavro Stillianedes, then moved again to Franklyn Rosavelt near the Coca Cola and Keo Factory, not far from Turkey town and easy acsess to Lady's Mile. I wanna cry talkin about it. What a privelige ! Then last of all we moved back to Kapsalos near the Stadium, not far frm Cafe Paris...remember it ? I got my Bronze swimming badge in Tunnel beach. When I returned 20 years later Tunnel beach looked exactly the same with the same Cafe and memorable paving slabs I used to sunbathe on with Sarah Ferrier lathered in COOKING OIL...ah - them were the days. I had an insignificant part in the JESUS OF NAZARETH play at Curium Amphitheatre. My heart hankers after it so much that I recently started a Blog and a website about it. I have 5 kids, 32,30,28.10 & 9. I have been medically neglected and expect to receive some compensation eventually so you can guess where I'll be taking my kids - You bet - and drive them all crazy with nostalgia. Yeras ago I wrote to the Home Office to apply to live there but my kids were not happy to leave their home and village so I had to abort that idea. We should have done a 3 year posting but we only did 2 and came home just prior to the Invasion as my dad was invalided out of the forces ill, after 22 years. My sisters, Dawn and Lesley Parsons, also felt the same about Cyprus but our 2 year old sister Rachel was too young to remember. Dawn died 4 years ago with a bad heart at 47, on my sofa in front of 9 of us. My resuss attempts failed. We always remenissed about our fantasic life in Cyprus. She LOVED the discos and often bunked off school to go to them, lol. The KALEVA, Le Bablbone, KINGS, C'est La Vie - lol - My best wishes to anyone who remembers any of us - God Bless - Alena x

I'm blown away now ! I lived at 28 Tyrone Street between 1960 until 1966 aged 6 to 12. I remember the school well and Dad (Christopher Ashby) worked at the base. I remember walking down the cliffs and through a long tunnel to the beach. We used to nick badges off the army uniforms in the changing rooms. A particular friend from those old days was a chap called Anthony Naylor. He used to play new beatles songs on a little plastic guitar. I wish I could relive those days It was a brilliant lifestyle. Father Carmello at the Catholic church in limmasol ? My days as an alter boy? what memories. I had a sister who died and was burried in limmasol and I'd love to know if her grave is still there. Anyone who can take photos of Tyrone street for me would be a friend for life.
Cheers
Brian (Australia) now aged 53

As with everyone else, I had a fantastic time in Cyrpus and at St. John's. I was at the school between 77 and 80, and was in A1 class in those years. I was in the same year group as the Ellery sisters (their dad was the head). I was also in York house with Mr Hodgson the Head of House. I lived in Akrotiri, up near the water towers and I went back to have a little look at both the school and my old house about 3 years ago. The school was a lot smaller than I remember it, I must have been a midget, but I did buy an old school tie from the school receptionist whilst I was there. I also found that my old house on Andrews Crescent was gone. The house and the complete street gone and now just bondu.
Because of Cyprus, I got my love for the sun. So much so, that I moved to Australia, where I am a Police Forensic Investigator...funny thing really, as I didn't take a liking or a shine to science subjects when I was at St. Johns'; I kind of liked the beach, sports and of course all the girls too much.

St John's 1972-1975. What a school, what a time. Particularly remember Nick Taylor as we were in all three L6 subjects together (and the only two in Physics and Applied Maths with the exasperated Ken MacGregor). Too many other names to mention but like Nick I am now balding, fattish etc. See FR for more.

Hi guys. I cant believe I actually recall a number of you from my time at St Johns between '71 and '75. I spent the most formative and fun years at this school and echo what everyone else says that it was without doubt the best time I had in my Yoof!. I recall the bus journeys each day from Paramali, the climb down the cliff each day to Tunnel Beach, the odd switch each year from the winter to summer uniforms (the girls all had theirs made but the guys had t wear those khaki shorts and long white socks!
I recall the dark (but fun) days of '74 when those of us in Epi rallied around Dodge for disco's to lighten the mood. For some reason or another, i remember the only movie we could watch in the outdoor cinema (I was a projectionist) was Live and Let Die which I have only recently seen again since those days. I remember Mike Dollimore, Steve Bannerman, Louise Cass, Katrina Wilcox, Jane Scroggs, Martin Allinson and his sister, Christine Foden (what happened to her - she disappeared very quickly) and, given time, could probably remeber others. I have seen piccies of my brother Larry and my sister Tish with me at Epi Yacht club on Friends re-united. I remember the House competitions at school (I was Winchester - what were the others???) and some pretty hairy school events (the 24 hour sport-a-thon of '73) and I remember my maths teacher and Mr astles my Music teacher. Good memories! I am a rather dull, fattish and middle aged accountant now with a great family and live in Kent - time to go back to the school for a visit I think! Please contact if you were there in those years - I ended up in lower 6th so if you knew me you'd be about 50 +/- a couple of years by now.........

Hello St. John's! I was a pupil from 1978 until 1981 and had a fantastic time. The staff were so professional and when I became a teacher myself I tried to make sure the pupils I taught experienced the same high quality teaching I had been fortunate enough to receive. A bit more difficult to achieve in UK state schools I admit. Reading the letters posted on here it seems the St. John's happiness runs across decades and generations of children. Keep up the good work!

Hi, I went to St johns between 1987 and 1990 best years of my life as a kid, loads of great memories, since then I have been all over the world both serving with the Military and now as a security consultant. I did go back to the school in 1997 whist serving and seen Mr Donovan who used to be the deputy head but then was the head. and also had a few drinks with the old teachers down tunnel beach sailing club, great milestone of my life and I will be going back again in the near future to see how many of the OLD folks are still there. If you remember those years (87-90) and remember me please get intouch. all the best Kev Young

Just looking at this site and making my husband and children jealous of our amazing school. I had the best time there and wish I could give my children the same experience. I was at StJohns from 1988-1991, possibly the best place to sit GCSE's? My brother Matt also attended as a YTS boy (he was a groom at the saddle club in Akrotiri) we both reminisce endlessly about Cyprus.

Hi all, well the and meself were in Cyprus just two weeks ago. Went to have a look at the old school but couldn't get past the security guard.. where'd he come from? Sure we never had one during my time(1985-87).. lol. We managed to get to the Army fete in Happy Valley though many memories came flooding back, the valley itself has hardly changed. Also went to Kourion beach where I spent almost every day after school during the summer.. and they've put a tarmac layer on the road to the beach... boy that used to be a bumpy ride. Also got up to Paphos & Larnaca. we stayed in Limassol the place has changed so much.

Hi - I attended St John's when it first opened in around 1960-63, having previously been at school at Beringeria (where they taught a completely different syllabus!) I took daily readings from the weather station at 9am every single day of the year! We lived in Tyrone St, so I just jumped over the back fence and over the scrub, and I was there - I look back with fond memories still, some 45+ years later.

I was at St. Johns from 86-89 while living in Akrotiri. What an amazing time! The beaches, the short hours, the weather. Me and my wife got married in Cyprus in 2004, and I went back and had a look at the school (from a distance of course!) and all the other places I used to visit while living on the island. It'd be nice to get in touch with anyone who remembers me, though my memory for names is fading fast! Jonathan Martin? David Snell? Any others?

I sat my O levels in June/July 1974 and left the island the day after my last exam. Ran for the school and played footie for Spectrum Youth Club. Had a holiday job in the Summer hols. with the Royal Scots tidying up some of the mess. Had 4 families living in my house at one stage.

Still in touch with Colin, fondly remember Karen and Paul, Frazer, Mark, Glen and Peter Firth.

Still harbour hopes of going back and walking in the footsteps of the past.

Hullo All,

I was at this marvellous School in 1971/72. living in Berengeria village,(10, Mulberry Mansions). Played Footie for BG flyers and helped run the youth club. Can i say what made the school so great (though of course we didnt appreciate it at the time) was the closeness and comradarie of the forces kids, Something unrivalled in Civvy street.
Be well and be happy :) Paul JH

I'm very impressed that my own school that in1966 was just a lot of tin huts in Happy Valley. I have a lot of happy memories of the bus journey from Akrotira to Episkoki and would love to tell all about it. My father was posted from 66 to 69 so we had the time to dicover the Island before it was broken up in two. I spent many a day at the stables after school in Eposkopi and got on my bike to get there. Sometimes the bus would be late but my friend and I would'nt worry cos we would just go to the beach . We would dive of a little rock . That was 1968
I now live in Spain

I attended St Johns from 1970-1972 with my sister Jane. It was a fabulous school. I enjoyed my time there although I did little in the way of school work. Would love to contact Sharon Brennan, Sheila McCormick, Zena Wallace?? Frances Brown (who I also met in Singapore about 1965) and anyone else who may have known me.

I went to St Johns between 93 - 95. I had a great time there and made quite a few friends, some of whom I'm still in touch with: Paul Liddell, John Clover, Andy Seymour and Lee Doak.

There never really is a day goes by without thoughts of St Johns school. I was there from Nov 1987- July 1990 and it truly had the biggest positive educational influence of all my schools, resulting in my continual enthusiastic love of learning. From the exciting drama productions with Mr Liddel to the inspiring science lessons. Furthermore, St Johns school and its motivated teachers nurtured my love of walking, history and nature through the fantastic Horse Shoe Hike. Thank you is such seems such a small sentiment.

Adding to Mark Wheelans comments - The years I spent at St Johns as a student and a sixth form student were some of the best years of my life and still look back at photographs at the good times had at the school and in Cyrpus. I was fortunate to work for two years at St Johns School and enjoyed the time spent there and have continued doing the same work in a school in UK. The new style website looks great!!

hey all,

I've just been looking through my pictures from my time in cyprus (2002-2005). I have to admit, i loved it out here and i have some amazing memories of st. johns and episkopi. If i could, i'd love to be back! Mind you i am coming out this summer for three weeks :] and i cant wait! I wonder if Mr. Harris, Mr. Yates and Mrs. Cambridge are still at st.johns?

Currently i'm at Peter Symonds College, and hopefully i should be off to Cardiff/Manchester Uni to study International Business. If anyone wants to get in touch, don't hesitate!

Take Care, Callum Bloor.

They say that school days are the best of your life? At St Johns they were.

Having done all my secondary education there it gave me so much. Fondest memories are all the drama productions with Mr Liddel, playing polo for the school along with Henry Altenburger, Andrea Howling and Sarah Robinson. The sixth form of 88-90 was outstanding Phil "Pixy" Nixon, Sarah Craft, Jason Fry, Sarah Rob to name but a few.

We go back to Cyprus every year and drive past the school and into the Valley, it brings back great memories.

Thanks, it was a great time!

I was a student here from 1985 - 1988, the hapiest years of my life until i met my wife. In fact if I had stayed here longer life would have probably been a lot better for me. I was in Lincoln House, lived on RAF Akrotiri and caught the number 51 bus. When I win the lottery, I'm moving to Cyprus so my sons can come this school and have the times of their lives too. If your a student at St Johns currently, enjoy it you're in an amazing place. Aaron Male if you read this get in touch. Bye.

I was at St Johns between 1983-1985 (1B1, 2B1); I lived in berengaria, 9 almond avenue. It was the best time of my life. It was so odd starting school at 7.30 in the morning and being home by 2pm. I recently went back to cyprus for a holiday and had a look around happy valley. I was so disappointed when the guard at the school entrance would'nt let me in. Sorry Paul with security and todays climate we can not let people in to look around the school without the correct clearence WEBMASTER

I have just been looking at the website and recalling my time at the old school. I was there between 76 - 78 and 82 - 83 and had many happy memories. I doubt if any of the old staff are there now - Mr Ellery was the head and I was in his daughters years. Like most of you I have been to many schools, but St Johns has always been my favourite, it was just a lovely place to be. I am going to Cyprus on holiday in July and I a visit is already planned..
